Department of Botany

Introduction

Since the inception of the department in the year 1997, it has made tremendous stride in imparting qualitative teaching and initiating research on region specific areas. The above statement bears testimony to the fact that at least 10 (ten) students have qualified the NET/SLET and many of them have been absorbed in teaching profession and in important Research Institutes. The Department has been able to garner financial support from important National Agencies like UGC, DBT, CSIR, GBPIHED and Ministry of Environment & Forests for a number of major research projects.

Inventorization and documentation of indigenous knowledge system relating to bio-resources is a priority research programme under biodiversity programme. The future schemes would be to authenticate the information collected from the field study. This would require establishment of a full-fledged department of biochemistry and pharmacological laboratory to carry out phytochemical and biochemical importance. The ultimate aim is to establish scientific validity of IKS information so that full commercial utilization of local resources could be undertaken for the benefit of the local communities.
